In the traditional pilates mat sequence, The Teaser is number 22 for a reason. It’s not simply an “ab exercise,” but a culmination of everything that comes before it bringing together strength, control balance, and precision into one integrated movement.
By the time you reach The Teaser in the workout Joseph Pilates designed, the body should already be warm, the spine articulated segment by segment, and the deep abdominals responsive and coordinated with the breath. The Teaser doesn’t just build strength it reveals whether that foundation is truly in place.
A True Integration of Strength and Control
The Teaser evolves naturally out of earlier exercises that develop spinal articulation and abdominal strength like the Roll Up and Single Leg Stretch. But here, the demand shifts.
Instead of working with support from the floor, the body must organise itself into a balanced “V” shape, where both the upper and lower body are lifted and sustained from the centre. There is no place to hide, if momentum has been used in earlier exercises, or if the abdominals are not working deeply and evenly, The Teaser makes that immediately obvious.
When approached with the correct sequencing, the movement feels light and controlled. The spine lengthens, the legs float, and the shape is held with ease rather than strain.
Deep Core Strength & Spinal Organisation
While The Teaser is often associated with abdominal strength, its true benefit lies in how it organises the entire trunk.
The deep abdominals must draw inward and upward to support the lumbar spine, while the hip flexors assist without dominating. At the same time, the spine must remain long and lifted out of the pelvis, avoiding collapse or gripping.
This creates a balanced relationship between strength and length. Without it, the body tends to either drop back into the lower spine or overwork through the thighs and neck.
The Teaser therefore becomes a powerful measure of how well the body can stabilise from the abdominals while maintaining freedom through the limbs.
Balance Control
One of the most defining aspects of The Teaser is its demand for balance and awareness of your centre of gravity.
In this lifted position, your base of support is minimal, and your body weight is suspended between the sit bones. Small shifts in the legs or torso can easily throw you off balance.
The exercise teaches you how to find and maintain that balance by coordinating breath, abdominal support, and precise positioning of the limbs. Rather than gripping or bracing, the goal is to create a feeling of lift and suspension.
Each body will experience this balance point slightly differently, depending on proportions and movement habits. Learning to adjust and refine this position builds a deeper awareness of how your body organises itself in space.
The Teaser earns its place in the mat sequence by demanding control, not momentum. It brings together everything that has come before it and prepares the body for more advanced, full-body coordination reinforcing a key pilates principle: true strength is expressed through control, precision, and ease.
