If you’ve decided to try Pilates for the first time, you might be nervous and understandably wondering what will happen in your first class.
This will be highly dependent on the style of class you’re attending. For instance, a group reformer or mat class will be very different to a semi-private class.
We specialise in semi-private mat and equipment classes, so the following information is based on what to expect in your first class here at Pilates Plus.
Your first few sessions are designed to establish a solid foundation to help you move from being a nervous newbie to a well-seasoned and confident pilates participant.
The original pilates method is based on movement principles that has breath control and activation of stabilising postural muscles at its “core”.
Your first class begins the learning process with these principles explained and then practiced.
It can sometimes appear that you’re not really doing much movement, but by the end of the session you will feel how small movements can create a big change in how your body feels.
Pilates isn’t about pushing yourself to the limit or achieving perfection right away. The focus is on quality of movement with progress over time.
Generally, most people feel uplifted, lighter, less tight and tense and a nice level of muscle work in the body at the end of the session.
During class, the teacher will be assessing your movements, adjusting when necessary and making notes about which exercises will be the most beneficial to include in your ongoing beginner program.
If you’re participating in an equipment based class, you will be slowly introduced to some of the pilates studio apparatus.
Learning how to use all this equipment safely and effectively is essential and can also take some time to master.
As a beginner, it’s important to learn pilates in an environment where you feel relaxed, not pressured and able to work at your own pace and level.
Your teacher will ask for your feedback on all of he above to ensure that you’re getting the most out of the session.
Don’t expect to get everything right on your first try!!
Pilates is a journey, and it may take time for you to master certain movements and build up your strength and flexibility.
Listen to your body and be patient with yourself. If something feels uncomfortable, feel free to ask your teacher for modifications or adjustments.
Remember, pilates is all about progression, not perfection—so enjoy the process, and be proud of every step you take toward becoming stronger and more mindful of your body.
