Pilates Basics: Elongation

The spine is one of the most vital structures in the human body, and Jospeh Plates talks about it being the ridgepole of the body which is involved in nearly all human movements.

The original pilates method is well known for “making people taller”! But it actually returns the spine to its most lengthened or “elongated” state.

It’s a lifted and relaxed posture.

In simple terms, elongation of the spine refers to the act of lengthening and creating space between each of the vertebrae, the bones that make up the spine.

Everyday activities, like sitting at a desk and really just being upright in gravity have a big compressive force on the entire body but particularly the spine.

And if you have postural imbalances, this compressive force may strain the structures of the spine and potentially compromise the health and longevity of the intervertebral discs.

The absolute foundation of pilates core strength is spine elongation…length and strength at the same time.

Elongating the spine isn’t about forcefully stretching or overextending the back.

It is a controlled and mindful practice of activating the deepest postural and core strength muscles in coordination with the breath. It’s this coordination of the breath with movement that has the biggest impact on the length of the spine.

This can be compared to the way a tree grows tall toward the sky, maintaining its strength and stability by elongating its trunk and roots.

Weak or tight postural muscles, and spine injuries or issues can initially inhibit the ability of the spine to elongate.

It’s important to address these issues first with an assessment and a pilates program that is specifically designed for your individual needs.

Learning these foundations of the original pilates method does take some time, but your patience will be rewarded with a spacious and healthy spine.

So, take a moment today to stand tall, breathe deeply, and elongate your spine—it’s a small step that can lead to big rewards for your long term health and wellness.
