Number nine in Joseph Pilates’ original 34 traditional mat exercises is the Rocker with Open Legs, now commonly referred to as Open Leg Rocker.
This exercise is a direct progression from the previous one, the Spine Stretch.
Open Leg Rocker is considered an intermediate to advanced exercise. To master it, a solid understanding and application of Pilates principles, along with a foundation of strength and flexibility, are essential.
The Deep “C Curve”
In Pilates, the C-Curve refers to the shape of the spine when it is fully flexed, creating a rounded form. This curve is crucial for all rolling exercises in Pilates, both on the mat and with equipment.
To achieve the necessary lower back curve (which counteracts its natural forward arch), deep abdominal strength and flexibility throughout the entire back line of the body are required—not just in the spine.
Open Leg Rocker challenges both of these principles, demanding the body remain in a C-Curve while the arms and legs are locked in an extended position.
If the C-Curve shape is lost, the movement will either fail or result in a jerky motion through the lower back, rather than the smooth, controlled movement desired.
Full Body Core Strength
Open Leg Rocker is an integrated exercise that engages the entire body—not just the core.
As Joseph Pilates would say, the arms and legs are “rigid,” meaning they must be fully engaged and active.
Deep abdominal strength, arm and leg strength, shoulder and hip placement and mobility, and spinal length and mobility all contribute to the exercise.
If any one of these components fails to engage properly, maintaining control and precision becomes challenging, hindering the fluidity of the roll.
Spine Massage
Rolling exercises, such as Open Leg Rocker, are also valuable for massaging the spine through movement.
While modern tools like foam rollers and spiky balls are often used to massage the spine, these are typically employed when limitations prevent full spinal flexion.
However, for those who can flex their spine without restriction, learning to massage the spine through movement, as in Open Leg Rocker, is a highly beneficial skill.
Although Open Leg Rocker is an advanced Pilates exercise, several foundational exercises in the traditional mat program, such as The Rollup, are suitable for beginners and provide a stepping stone toward mastering this challenging movement.
