Meet The Team: Josh

From an early age I was passionate about sports and exercise, mainly endurance sports and martial arts, with many hours spent in the pool, on the track or at the Dojo. I was fascinated by the body’s capabilities and what could be achieved through willpower, dedication and training, and I enjoyed testing my own limits.

Later in my 20’s I decided to become a Gym Instructor & Personal Trainer to learn more about how to strengthen and enhance my body so I could continue to perform physically as well as impart some of what I knew through training and coaching others. It was during this time that I learned of the Pilates method.

I was impressed by the scope of the Pilates method and it’s promised benefits of rebalancing the body. It focused more on the intrinsic value and qualities of movement over extrinsic measures of performance. After many years of intense exercise (as well as bouts of relative inactivity) and ongoing aches and pains, it offered a fresh approach and was what I needed to reconnect with my body. The method also helped me to widen my perspective of health, and through its many and varied repertoire find new merit and enjoyment in exercise and movement.

It’s now been over 15yrs since first learning of Pilates, and subsequently becoming a qualified practitioner, and I’m still continually amazed and inspired by what is achievable in the studio. I count myself lucky that every day I get to be in an environment and within a community where inclusivity and health is prioritized. Never-mind the early starts and late finishes, there is no place I’d rather be!

Favorite Food:
I’m not too particular, I like to mix it up. But a Tofu Banh Mi is my go-to for lunch at the moment, it’s flavorsome and satisfying without being too heavy.

Favorite Pilates Exercise:
Enjoying repertoire on the Spine Corrector at the moment, The Overhead in particular for its decompressive effect on the spine.

Mat or Equipment?
I like the simplicity, freedom and continuity of mat work, and the challenge of having to adapt to the repertoire. Whereas in the studio there is more scope to adapt repertoire to suit the person, with more options to vary support, resistance, and spatial orientation. The two approaches really complement each other and doing both at least in some form is the best way of experiencing everything Pilates has to offer.

Best Thing About Being a Pilates Teacher:

Seeing improvement in structural integrity and movement capability, created through deliberate practise!
