Are You Too Busy To Take Care Of Your Body?

Are You Too Busy To Take Care Of Your Body?

It’s around this time of the year where a few things start to happen…and they happen EVERY year.

People get busy and tired! With all the extra Xmas activities that get added in to an already busy life, something has to give, and it’s usually training sessions that get ditched.

And tired busy people get stressed! Being stressed really isn’t much fun and has a detrimental effect on your body, creating tight, tense muscles.

So already there are two things happening that are making your body feel neglected. No training and stress! Then what gets added on top of that is a dramatic drop in the QUALITY of food that gets eaten and a dramatic increase in the QUANTITY of food eaten, and of course alcohol consumption increases.

But the bottom line is that your BODY doesn’t know that it’s Xmas! It can only respond to what you do with it and to it.

So if you don’t exercise, get stressed, eat too much of the wrong food, drink too much alcohol your body will respond accordingly.

Your muscles will get tight, your joints will get stiff…especially your spine if you are carrying extra heavy shopping bags, or moving heavy furniture. You’ll gain weight, feel sluggish, maybe not sleep well…yikes!!!

Now you might think that it’s just a few weeks and won’t make much difference in the long run, but I’ve been involved in the fitness industry long enough to know that it does make a difference.

I reckon that I would have seen hundreds of people start their new year with a health and fitness program that’s designed to just get them back to where they were a few months before Xmas, rather than a program that gets them going on achieving a greater level of fitness, health and wellness.

So the good news is there are a few simple actions you can take to ensure you have a fun, joyous Xmas and look after your body at the same time.

Stretch at home every day

Stretching is free, requires none to very little equipment and takes just 15 minutes out of your day. To be honest, if you don’t stretch every day, whether it’s Xmas or not, your body will not be happy and eventually let you know with aches and pains or even an injury.

If you can’t get to your regular exercise session, then go for a walk instead. Again, it’s free to do and you can do it anytime, and anywhere and it will relax your mind as well as be great for your body. It doesn’t have to be a huge effort, just 15 minutes will do the trick.

Just a little, not a lot

As far as food and alcohol go over the Xmas/ New Year holiday, a little is ok, a lot isn’t! So try eating or drinking half of what you would normally and exercise some self-discipline. Remember your body will keep any unused energy (food and alcohol) in its storage tanks…fat cells. So, taste and try, just don’t overdo it!
